Wonderful potential of the light-emitting diodes! Light installations,

14/09/2006

Many recent events of the lighting market reminded its players of the times we are living in. Times when even the most fantastic ideas have their technological solutions. For instance, at the festival held in Ireland and England in honor of the centenary of playwright Samuel Becket, one of the participants, American artist Jenny Holtser, had developed lighting projections which illuminated London buildings eight nights long. She   made Becket’s quotations running along the Barbican Center, the traditional site of Becket’s Festivals, City Hall, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Parliament and Somerset House buildings. Famous texts that turned into the inartificial “creeping lines” were absolutely changing the famous buildings and illustrating creative principles of Becket’s work, the writer, who promulgated minimalism in his plays.

Recently, a LED installation that changes color according to atmospheric pressure fluctuations was also fixed in London. The installation is located on the top of the innovative 22-storey residential complex Tabard Square near London Bridge. It is a glass two-storey high cube with the inner illumination. Light-emitting diodes called Color Kinetics controlled by the Pharos Lighting Playback Controller (LPC) system are used for illumination. The conception of joining the lighting system to the barometer and its development belongs to Jeff Shaw, lighting designer of the Arup Lighting company. The Pharos LPC system is able to change LED colors depending on atmospheric pressure fluctuations receiving and interpreting data from the electronic barometer which is also located on the top of the building. The entire color scale with seasonal corrections is based on these data which helps to cover the full color spectrum over a year. Some innovations of the Russian lighting market will be demonstrated to you under our exhibition “LighTech”. This is the first exposition in Russia, devoted to the professional illumination.
